Ashes में ऑस्ट्रेलिया के खिलाफ 4-1 की करारी हार के बाद England cricket में बड़ा बदलाव देखने को मिला है। New Zealand के खिलाफ Lord’s में खेले जाने वाले पहले टेस्ट के लिए England ने अपनी टीम घोषित कर दी है, जिसमें ओपनर Zak Crawley और नंबर-3 बल्लेबाज Ollie Pope को बाहर कर दिया गया है। यह टेस्ट 4 जून से शुरू होगा।
England ने तीन uncapped खिलाड़ियों- Emilio Gay, James Rew और Sonny Baker को squad में जगह दी है। वहीं तेज गेंदबाज Ollie Robinson की करीब दो साल बाद टीम में वापसी हुई है। Robinson ने England के लिए आखिरी टेस्ट फरवरी 2024 में खेला था।
इस चयन को Ashes हार के बाद England के red-ball setup में बड़े बदलाव के तौर पर देखा जा रहा है। लंबे समय से Zak Crawley को Ben Stokes और Brendon McCullum era में लगातार backing मिलती रही थी, लेकिन खराब Ashes प्रदर्शन और county cricket में कमजोर form के बाद अब उन्हें बाहर कर दिया गया है। Crawley ने 2025-26 Ashes में 10 पारियों में 273 रन बनाए थे।
Ollie Pope को भी squad से बाहर रखना बड़ा फैसला माना जा रहा है। Pope England की Test batting lineup में लंबे समय से नंबर-3 की भूमिका निभा रहे थे, लेकिन Ashes की हार के बाद selectors ने batting order में नई दिशा अपनाने का संकेत दिया है।
England ने इसी बीच former Australia batter Marcus North को national selector नियुक्त किया है। England and Wales Cricket Board
के अनुसार North अब senior team से लेकर youth programmes तक England men’s squads के selection process में योगदान देंगे। North Durham County Cricket Club में director of cricket रह चुके हैं और Ben Stokes के साथ करीब से काम कर चुके हैं।
नए चेहरों में Emilio Gay पर सबसे ज्यादा नजर रहेगी। Gay ने Durham के लिए county season में शानदार प्रदर्शन किया है और उन्हें Ben Duckett के साथ opening option के रूप में देखा जा रहा है। Wicketkeeper-batter James Rew को भी मौका मिला है, जबकि Sonny Baker को pace attack में नया विकल्प माना जा रहा है।
England की pace-bowling स्थिति भी इस समय आसान नहीं है। Jofra Archer IPL commitments की वजह से पहले टेस्ट के लिए उपलब्ध नहीं हैं। Mark Wood और Brydon Carse चोट से जूझ रहे हैं। ऐसे में Gus Atkinson, Ollie Robinson, Josh Tongue, Matthew Fisher और Sonny Baker पर तेज गेंदबाजी की जिम्मेदारी रहेगी।
England squad में Ben Stokes captain के तौर पर वापसी कर रहे हैं। Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell और Jamie Smith batting core का हिस्सा हैं। Spin department में Rehan Ahmed और Shoaib Bashir को जगह मिली है।

कुल मिलाकर England ने Ashes की हार के बाद साफ संदेश दे दिया है कि अब सिर्फ पुराने भरोसे पर टीम नहीं चलेगी। County performance, fresh energy और red-ball balance को ध्यान में रखते हुए नई टीम तैयार की जा रही है। Crawley और Pope का बाहर होना Bazball era का सबसे बड़ा selection shake-up माना जा सकता है।
